Five checks, in this order.
1. The date range
A transaction is filtered out by the period before anything else. The date used is the date the transaction cleared, which for a card payment can be several days after it was made.
A payment made on the thirty-first and cleared on the second belongs to the following month, and looking at the month it was made will not find it.
2. Which account it belongs to
Where several accounts are connected, the view may be filtered to one of them. A payment made on a card is not in the checking account.

3. Whether it is waiting to be categorized
Transactions arrive before they are assigned to a category. Until then they appear in the review queue rather than under a heading — see uncategorized transactions.
This is the usual explanation when a total is right and a category looks short.
Note that the review queue itself shows only the last 12 months. A transaction older than that is still in your books and still counted — it is simply held out of that list, so a newly connected bank does not present two years of imported history as though it were today's work. The banner at the top of the queue says how many older items are held back.
4. Whether it falls before your books start date
If you set a books start date — usually because you bought the business, or a previous owner's history came in with your field software — everything before it is deliberately excluded from the books. Those transactions are not missing by accident; they were declared not yours.
You can see and change that date on the banner at the top of the review queue. Clearing it brings the earlier history back on the next ledger rebuild.
This is the one case where a transaction is genuinely absent from your totals rather than merely filed somewhere you did not expect.
5. When the connection last brought data in
Banks deliver transactions on their own schedule, and a recent transaction may not have been sent yet.
