A command brief is a written summary of your business for a period: what changed, what went well, what is at risk, and what to do about it.
It exists because a dashboard answers questions you thought to ask. A brief tells you the things you would not have gone looking for.
What is in one
An executive summary — the period in a paragraph.
What changed — the movements since the last brief, computed rather than described. This is the section most worth reading twice, because a number moving is more informative than a number being high or low.
Wins, and they come first.
Risks — what is concerning, with the figures behind it.
Actions — what to do, drawn from the period's findings.
Completed actions — what you closed out since the last brief.
Tier scores with their movements, and the overall health score.
Why wins are first
Deliberate, and not decoration.
An owner reading a document about their own business is braced for bad news, and a brief that opens with risks gets skimmed or avoided. Placed first, the wins are read — and more usefully, they tell you what to keep doing, which is information a risk list cannot carry.
Most small businesses have no mechanism at all for noticing what worked. The month ends, the problems are memorable, the things that quietly went right are not.
Completed actions matter more than they look
Seeing what you closed out since the last brief is the only feedback loop most owners get on their own follow-through.
It answers a question nobody else will ask: of the things this told me to do last time, how many did I do. That is uncomfortable and it is the most useful line in the document.
Brief, health score, action plan
Three different jobs, easy to blur.
The health score is a reading of the present, in one grade.
The action plan is what needs attention right now, and it changes as your data changes.
The brief is a record of a period — written once, not updated, and worth keeping because comparing this month's to last month's shows you the direction rather than the position.
