Appointments per route is the average number of jobs a technician completes on a day's route, across a rolling 30 days.
What it actually measures
Routing quality, more than anything about the people doing the work.
A technician doing three jobs a day is not necessarily slower than one doing six. They may be driving between them. Drive time is paid labour that appears on no invoice, and it is the difference between the two numbers far more often than pace is.
Why density pays
Every additional job on the same route is close to pure margin. The van is already out, the technician is already paid for the day, and the fixed cost of getting them into the field is already spent.
That makes route density one of the highest-return levers in a service business, and one of the cheapest — it is a booking decision rather than an expense.
Reading it against utilisation
The two together give the diagnosis:
Low appointments per route, low utilisation — not enough work booked, or it is scattered. A scheduling problem.
Low appointments per route, high utilisation — the jobs are long. Normal for installs, worth checking for service calls.
What raises it
Grouping work geographically, which is what service zones exist to support, and booking the same area on the same day rather than in the order calls arrive.
The second one is where most of the gain is, and it is the harder habit, because it means telling a customer Thursday when they asked for Tuesday.
