Towing is one of the purest forms of local service business: a driver is stranded somewhere, they need help right now, they pick up their phone and search. The business that appears first and looks credible gets the call. The ones that don't appear don't get considered.
There is no comparison shopping phase for most towing calls. The search, the decision, and the call all happen within three to five minutes. This means that appearing at the top of search results at the moment of need — often in the middle of the night, on weekends, in bad weather — is essentially the entire marketing challenge for a towing company.
Here is the local SEO strategy built for that reality.
The emergency search pattern
A stranded driver's search looks like one of these:
"Towing near me"
"Emergency towing [city]"
"Roadside assistance near me"
"Car tow truck [neighborhood or highway name]"
"Flat tire service near me"
These searches happen from a mobile phone, typically with location services enabled, and the searcher clicks the first phone number they trust. In Google, that means the map pack — the three businesses shown at the top of the search results with their star rating, distance, and business hours.
Getting into that map pack for towing searches is your primary SEO goal. Everything in this guide is oriented toward that outcome.
Google Business Profile: the most critical piece
For a towing company, the GBP is more important than the website. A driver searching from the side of the road will see your GBP listing — your name, phone number, hours, and rating — before they ever see your website. Many will call directly from the GBP listing without visiting the site at all.
Primary category. "Towing Service" is the standard primary category. Check whether "Auto Wrecker" or "Roadside Assistance Service" captures different search volume in your market — in some areas these are searched differently. If you primarily do roadside assistance (jump starts, lockouts, flat tires) rather than heavy tow calls, that distinction may affect which primary category serves you best.
Secondary categories. Add relevant secondary categories based on the services you offer: "Roadside Assistance Service," "Auto Locksmith" if you do lockouts, "Truck Repair Shop" if you do heavy truck towing.
Hours. If you offer 24-hour service, make sure your GBP hours reflect that. A towing company with hours listed as 8am to 5pm will lose every call that comes in after business hours, because Google shows hours prominently in the search result and drivers assume a business that's "closed" won't answer. If you operate 24/7, set your GBP accordingly.
Services tab. List every service you offer with a specific name and description: Emergency towing, flatbed towing, long-distance towing, motorcycle towing, heavy-duty truck towing, winch-out service, roadside assistance, jump start service, flat tire service, lockout service, impound and storage. Each service listed is an additional query you can rank for.
Phone number. Your primary phone number on the GBP must be one that is answered around the clock. Nothing loses a towing call faster than a driver who finds your listing and gets no answer. If you use an AI receptionist or answering service for off-hours, make sure the number on your GBP routes to it.
Response time in the description. Consider including your average response time in your GBP description. "Average 25-minute response time in [city]" is information a stranded driver wants to know, and it makes your listing stand out compared to competitors who don't include it.
Reviews: the tie-breaker for towing
When multiple towing companies appear in the map pack, review count and rating are the primary tie-breaker. A driver who has three options will pick the one with more reviews and a higher rating, assuming response times look similar.
Collecting reviews for a towing business is harder than for other service businesses because the customer interaction ends quickly and the customer is often stressed. The key is speed: the review request needs to come within hours of the service, while the relief of getting back on the road is still fresh.
The most effective approach for towing companies: send a text message to the customer's phone within one to two hours of completing the job. "Hope the rest of your day went better! If you have a moment, a Google review would mean a lot to our small business — [direct link]." Keep it short, keep it human, and make the link one tap away.
Over time, a towing company that consistently asks every customer for reviews will accumulate a volume that protects them against occasional bad calls and differentiates them from competitors who never ask.
Service area coverage: mapping your territory
Towing companies typically serve a specific geographic area — a county, a set of cities, or a corridor along a highway. Your local SEO needs to cover that entire area, not just the city where you are based.
For each city, community, or major highway in your service area, consider building a service area page on your website. A page titled "Towing in [City] and [Surrounding Area]" that names specific landmarks, highways, and common breakdown locations in that area performs better for local searches than a single generic "service area" page.
Common content for a towing service area page:
The specific areas and highways covered. Response time from your dispatch location. Types of vehicles and service calls common in that area (highway work, residential, commercial district). Any local context that makes this area distinct — if you regularly serve a stretch of highway with frequent breakaways, mention it.
For GBP, towing companies should set a service area radius that accurately reflects where your trucks actually go. Do not set an overly broad service area hoping for more visibility — Google's algorithm for service area businesses uses the service area setting, and an inflated one can actually hurt your relevance for local searches.
Speed and mobile: non-negotiable for emergency services
Emergency service calls come from mobile phones. If your website takes more than three seconds to load on a mobile connection, a meaningful percentage of drivers will give up before seeing your phone number.
Check your site's mobile load time using Google's PageSpeed Insights. The target is a load time under two seconds on a mobile connection. Common culprits for slow towing company sites: large uncompressed images, excessive third-party scripts, and non-optimized video.
Your phone number should be displayed prominently at the very top of every page, as a tap-to-call link on mobile. A driver who arrived at your website should be able to call you with a single tap, without scrolling.
AI search and towing
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI tools are increasingly used to find local services, including towing. The businesses AI tools recommend are those with complete, specific GBP profiles and websites that clearly describe their service area, response time, and the types of service they provide.
For towing specifically, make sure your website explicitly states:
The cities and areas you serve. Your average response time. Whether you operate 24 hours. The types of vehicles and situations you handle (motorcycles, heavy trucks, locked keys, dead battery).
These are the specifics that AI tools use to determine whether you are the right match for "I need a tow truck in [specific location] right now."
