Google Replaced Google Guaranteed With a New Verified Badge: What Contractors Need to Know

7/27/2026By Josh Caruso

Google retired the Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges in late 2025 and replaced them with a single Verified checkmark. Here is what changed.

If you have been running Google Local Services Ads or researching how to get the Google Guaranteed badge for your contracting business, you may have noticed that things look different than they did a year ago. That is because in October 2025, Google retired both the Google Guaranteed and Google Screened programs and replaced them with a single credential: the Google Verified checkmark.

This change affected every trades contractor, home service professional, and licensed service provider who had earned one of the old badges — or was planning to. Here is what actually changed and what it means for your business now.

What Google Guaranteed and Google Screened were

For several years, Google offered two different trust badges for businesses running Local Services Ads.

Google Guaranteed was designed for home service companies — HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, cleaning, landscaping, and similar trades. To qualify, businesses had to pass a background check through a Google-approved screening partner, hold the required licenses for their state and category, and maintain active insurance. The badge appeared as a green checkmark with the word "Guaranteed" on their Local Services Ads listing. Google also offered a limited reimbursement to customers who were dissatisfied with work performed by a Google Guaranteed provider — hence the name.

Google Screened was the equivalent for licensed professionals in categories like law, financial advising, real estate, and home inspection. The credential required a background check and license verification but did not include the customer reimbursement guarantee.

Both programs were managed through the Local Services Ads platform and were specifically tied to businesses running paid LSA campaigns.

What changed in October 2025

Google retired both programs on October 20, 2025, and replaced them with a single blue checkmark labeled "Google Verified." The new badge functions similarly to the old ones from a verification standpoint — businesses must still pass background checks, maintain current licenses, and carry appropriate insurance to qualify — but Google has simplified the presentation into one unified credential across all eligible categories.

The customer reimbursement guarantee that was part of the old Google Guaranteed program was eliminated with the transition. The new Verified badge does not come with a reimbursement commitment for dissatisfied customers.

The visual change is also notable. The old green checkmark and the word "Guaranteed" gave the badge a strong, specific promise in the way it was displayed. The new blue Verified checkmark is more neutral — it signals that Google has checked the business's credentials, without the additional implied assurance of the guarantee language.

Who is affected

If you were running Local Services Ads and had earned the Google Guaranteed badge, your listing now displays the new Verified checkmark instead. The underlying credential — the background check, license verification, and insurance — carries over. You do not need to re-apply as long as your verification documents are current.

If you were in the middle of the application process for Google Guaranteed or Google Screened when the transition happened, your application status transferred to the new Verified program. Google communicated this to advertisers in the Local Services Ads dashboard.

If you have not applied for verification at all, the path forward is the new Verified program. The eligibility categories and requirements are similar to the old programs, but administered under the unified system.

Does the badge still matter for your business?

Yes, though the context has shifted.

The Google Verified checkmark still appears on Local Services Ads listings and signals to potential customers that Google has screened the business. For customers choosing between two contractors in the map pack, a verified listing has a credibility advantage over an unverified one. The verification process filters out some of the fly-by-night operators who show up in local ad results, which means that badge still carries meaningful signal for customers who understand what it indicates.

The loss of the customer guarantee language is a real change in what the badge communicates. "Google Guaranteed" told customers something specific: if you are unhappy with the work, Google will help make it right. "Google Verified" is a weaker promise — it says Google has checked this business, not that Google stands behind the outcome of every job.

In practice, most customers do not read the fine print on these credentials. They see a checkmark, they associate it with trust, and it shifts their decision in your favor. That behavior has not changed just because the name of the badge changed.

The mistake most contractors make about the badge

The badge matters most when everything else is equal. If your Google Business Profile listing has strong reviews, current photos, and accurate service information — and your website communicates your credentials clearly — the badge reinforces the trust you have already established.

If your listing has few reviews, outdated photos, and your website is thin or generic, the badge alone will not close the gap. Customers who are doing any level of research beyond the first click will notice the other signals — or the absence of them.

This is why contractors who win consistently in local search treat the badge as part of a complete package, not a standalone differentiator. The verification credential, strong reviews, a well-maintained GBP listing, and a website that converts — these things work together.

How to get the Google Verified badge

The process runs through Google's Local Services Ads platform. You will need to create or update your Local Services Ads account, submit business information including your license number and insurance documentation, and complete the background check through Google's screening partner.

Processing time varies by business category and location, but most applicants receive a decision within two to four weeks if all documents are submitted correctly.

A few common reasons applications are delayed or declined: license documentation that does not match the business name on the account, insurance policies that do not list the correct business entity, and background check results that require additional review. If your application is stuck, the most effective path is to contact Local Services Ads support directly through the dashboard — the automated process does not always surface errors clearly.

What verification means for your ad performance

Verified listings in Local Services Ads do tend to perform better than unverified ones, for two reasons. First, many customers specifically filter for verified businesses when browsing LSA results. Second, Google's ranking algorithm for LSA gives some weight to verification status when determining ad position.

This means that for trades businesses running Local Services Ads, getting and maintaining your Verified credential is table stakes — not optional.

For businesses that are not yet running LSA but are considering it, verification is a prerequisite. You cannot run Local Services Ads without completing the credential process.

Your website and the trust ecosystem

Verification, reviews, GBP optimization, and your website are all part of the same trust ecosystem. A customer who clicks through from your verified LSA listing to a website that looks dated, loads slowly, or lacks specific information about your services is getting a mixed signal. The ad said "trusted contractor" and the website says something different.

The businesses that convert the most paid traffic into actual booked jobs are the ones where every step of the customer journey — the ad, the GBP listing, and the website — reinforces the same message.
